《饮用水水质准则》由WHO于1956年起草、1958年公布，并于1963年、1984年、1986年、1993年、1997年进行了多次修订补充。可以说《准则》是国际上现行最重要的饮用水水质标准之一，并成为许多国家和地区制定本国或地方标准的重要依据。
